SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Some bands are a bore to review. Some bands put on performances so dry and predictable that reviewers must stretch to find something to write about.? Not one of those bands. At Syracuse Jazz Fest on Friday night, the fiery octet played with so many genres and sonic textures that it's hard to know where to start.

So we'll start with Frank Malfitano, Jazz Fest's executive director and founder, who proclaimed the Mavericks to be 'the best live band in the world' before they even played a note. 'That's a lot of pressure,' said frontman, looking completely unfazed. As soon as he opened his mouth, he commanded the crowd with his romantic, slippery vibrato. Yes, Malo does sound like Roy Orbison. As a gal who grew up listening to 'Pretty Paper' and 'In Dreams,' Malo's voice smacked of strange, delicious nostalgia, and slight genre.
You cannot put The Mavericks in a box and that's just how they like it. One minute, they're a mariachi band, the next, they're swing. On different solos, accordionist Michael Guerra could channel a creepy carnival or a wedding polka dance.
Thousands of Jazz Fest fans saw the group last year as the opener for. For such an explosive band, it was too short a show. Props to Malfitano for bringing them back for a longer, headlining set. Keys player Jerry Dale McFadden set the fashion bar high last year with his leprechaun-green suit. This year, he didn't disappoint -- he kept his shamrock shoes and socks, but swapped suits for a bright white ensemble and vivid orange button-down, with an orange pocket square to match. Looking sharply like an inside-out Creamsicle, he crackled with electricity in his corner, delighting fans with twisting dances and occasional high kicks, to show off spindly green ankles.
On the other side of the stage, guitarist Eddie Perez played the ultimate flirt, winking at the crowd and occasionally holding alarmingly seductive eye contact as he plucked feverish solos. The always-electric performs 'Back in Your Arms' at Jazz Fest.

They write their songs to sound urgent, decisive and loud, right off the bat. A signature Mavericks dance song throws down the gauntlet immediately, forcing the players to live up to what they started. Such a challenge makes their live shows grand and almost cinematic. As they work their way up to a wall of sound, each player's distinct personality shines. Is there anything funnier than a dancing McFadden following the straight-faced trumpeter around the stage? During their cover of Chuck Berry's 'You Never Can Tell,' I couldn't help but think their tunes would perfectly suit a Quentin Tarantino film score.
A quick Google search revealed they've already done that: 'Foolish Heart' on 'From Dusk Till Dawn.' Dancing fans sang along loudly as The Mavericks ended their set with the popular 'All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down.'
