Taking into account fuel savings and other factors, the cost of owning my MS could be viewed as free. This may sound crazy, but just hear me out.
I purchased my MS in September 2013 for $96,000 including CA sales tax and have driven it 53,000 miles over the past 18 months (lots of road trips between NorCal and SoCal). I received a $7500 tax credit and $2500 CA rebate so total purchase cost was really $86,000. Now it appears that I could sell it for around $77,000 in the used car market resulting in only about $9,000 of depreciation. I have chosen to not pay for any service to the vehicle so far although it has been to the service center numerous times for warranty issues and free tire rotations. I am even still running original tires with about 3/32 to 4/32 tread depth left (19 in Michelin Primacy).
I happen to believe the car requires much less servicing than what Tesla recommends, and warranties are not affected either way, but that is for another discussion. Atls ppt. I think it is well established that the Model S is really holding its value in the used car market pointing to the growth of Tesla's brand, the 8-year unlimited mile warranty on the drive train, free supercharging for life, etc. I omitted depreciation and interest of the ICE from my analysis, as my focus was purely on the fact that fuel and servicing savings alone on Model S could justify much, if not all of the initial high price of the vehicle. I think in many situations, the car is more affordable than people realize due to its ultra low operating costs and low depreciation. And on top of that, I think it's the greatest driving machine ever produced. You can certainly add me to the category of someone who is not wealthy. But because my daily commute is 150 miles a day the offset of gas and existing monthly car payment really did make this car affordable. Am I at break even?
