You can save a.hwp file as a.doc file - just choose save as and then choose the bottom drop down box (under the fle name) - the.doc file is the bottom option I think. It also has a.rtf option if you find that keeps the formatting better. Open office will open both of these formats and you can save in the same format - don't save as an.odp file unless you have open office at school.
I have never tried converting a.doc file to a.hwp file but I am fairly sure that the Korean software will open the.doc files - it used to happen automatically on the school computer until I stopped it. If you're running 10.6+ you don't need to worry about using Windows on your Mac to at least use Hansoft's.hwp viewer program. Hancom Office Hanword Viewer 1.2 is available as a free download on the Mac App Store, and it's at a newer version than the app which they had for download on their website.
