Ok so I'm replacing a number of the cooling system parts on my 1998 528i, since the water pump belt broke on my wife's car two nights ago.and the water pump was well beyond needing to be replaced! Due to this 'emergency' & unexpected repair.I unfortunately have not had the chance to purchase the BMW Bentley manual yet.
Could someone please point me in the right direction for the torque specifications I need.or please post the specs. I need torque specs for: - the tension pulley bolt for the water pump belt - the idler pulley bolt for the water pump belt - the tension pulley bolt for the air conditioner belt - the bolts for the thermostat housing - the fan pulley to water pump bolts - the water pump bolts - the engine lift bracket bolts (these are the ones associated with the thermostat housing at the top front of the engine) I REALLY don't want to attempt to put everything back together without the proper torque specifications. Thank you very much. You're kidding right? I only torque things that requier peice of mind. Parts like that, if you can't do it nice and tight, you shouldn't be working on cars.I'll tell you what Jack.you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I've been working on my own cars for almost 30 years.so I think that I know what I'm taking about!!
The small 10mm nuts & bolts on the water pump are VERY important to torque properly.AND small bolts/studs like this are VERY easy to snap. I see that you have over 2500 posts here on BimmerForums.and based on your post above.all 2500 have got to be absolutely worthless. Haven't you ever heard the saying.' If you don't have anything good to say, shut the 'F' up!!!' BTW JACK.if your BMW Master Technician occupation is correct.you have got to be the worst mechanic in the business if you don't believe in toqueing nuts & bolts!!! Last edited by Pigoo; at 12:13 AM.
Well, Jack is a BMW Master Tech so he uses experience rather than torque wrench. I don't use torque wrench because I have been fixing cars for 25 years.
But I agree that the 10-mm WP nuts are easy to strip. I stripped my E23 WP (1983 735i) so that WP only had 3 nuts holding it!!!
Then I sold the E23. Buy a BMW TIS CD on ebay for $10. All torque values are included in there. Or use this Table, remember 'M' refres to the diameter of the bolt and NOT the wrench size: Here is a Cooling Overhaul I wrote in May 2006: (Don't use MTC Fan Blade, mine broke in one year, Use only BMW Fan Blade!). Hey Jack, I usually keep my mouth shut unless I have something to add. Maybe you should try that for a while. Have a little patience at least.
BTW Jack is correct about 'tight.' But, its been mentioned quite a bit on other forums that people stay out of this one because of this kind of flaming.
It hurts the growth and the rep here and is anti the notion of a BMW Community. I've helped this forum out left and right and people on it. This a great forum. Problem is it gets filled with repatative questions and at times questions that shouldn't be asked.

If you have been working on cars for 30 years, why did you even bother to ask such a question? You should know what tight enough or too tight is already from experience. I do torque bolt, wheels and clyinder head bolts, also torque to yield bolts. Thats all that requires a true torque. And BTW, I've never had a dis satisfied customer. This a great forum.
Problem is it gets filled with repatative questions and at times questions that shouldn't be asked.Jack, I do agree that when it comes to larger nuts & bolts that torque specs are not always as critical But when it comes to smaller nuts & bolts (like the 10mm nuts & bolts on the water pump) I like to use the proper torque. Especially when we are talking about small studs that can SNAP easily.and small studs that are embedded in aluminum & could even be pulled out. As a 'BMW Certified Master Mechanic' you know very well that BMW has a torque spec. For each & every nut & bolt!

If that's the case, don't you think that it's a smart idea that if you have the torque spec. & you have a torque wrench.that using the proper torque would be the professional way to complete the job??? You're a mechanic that may be working on cars 8-10 hours/day.5-6 days/week. So of course your idea of 'feel' when it comes tightening torques is going to be much better 'calibrated'.than a home Do-It-Your-selfer. How many water pumps on 1998 528i's do you think that I've changed. How many water pumps have I changed on the many different makes & model cars I've owned over the past 30 years.plenty.
